ROOK had a simple theme it wanted to explore with its Spring/Summer 2013 collection, and that was color. Focusing on traditional media to help create new products for their fashion was a primary goal. They wanted to art and fashion to be combined where it is fun, because the two should be fun. The designs from Rook are refreshing and uses a nice touch of the good old fashion techniques combined with the modern technology. This glimpse of the behind the scenes work with Joe King shows that the Rook release will certainly be one to look forward for as well as their future releases.

“Las Banditas” is an 18×24 3 color Screen Print. Inspired by Mexican folk art as well as stories from the Mexican revolution of 1910.
Prior to the Mexican Revolution, Mexico enacted the Mexican Civil Code which dramatically restricted the rights of all mexican women. Women were silently consumed by family and the Catholic Church without any identity of their own. “Las Banditas” celebrates the women of Mexico who were an integral part of the Mexican Revolution and the overthrow of Porfirio Diaz’s oppressive regime.
There is also a Steel Grey variant print, limited to 50. This is available for $19.99 w/ $6.99 shipping in the US at
Seventh Ink released the latest Gods and Goddesses series on t-shirts. The series is really based off Greek mythology and hopefully the next release will be of a different mythology, otherwise call it the triple G.(Greek Gods and Goddesses) The artwork is far superior compared to the last series with the foreshortening, highlights, shadows, and overall design seemed to be on point this time around. There were box sets which has the particular design engraved on it with the shirt inside that makes for a pretty cool collectible. As of now, there’s only 1 left. All of the shirts printed are on soft American Apparel t-shirts with waterbased inks. The only thing I dislike, which is more of personal preference is that all of the shirts has a giant left sleeve print of the logo. I understand branding, but sometimes I think maybe it could’ve been done a little less subtle or not at all for certain designs.
Anyway you can have the Athena, Hades, or Hephastus tee for $25. Click here to buy.
P.S. My personal fave is the Hades design, it’s just a badass design.
Nike Basketball’s t-shirt design philosophy seems to set a new standard with colors, graphics, illustrations and art that excites and sparks a conversation. Nike designer Jack Aguirre discusses his recent process behind the new “Superhuman” series featuring Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, and Kevin Durant. The designs pays homage to the players and focuses on their alter egos. You’ll see the sketches followed by the final outcome. I can definitely appreciate the full step by step process of this. I personally think the goal was achieved to give these players a superhero look with stunning details.
I’ve been drawing recently and I hit a point where I was forcing myself to be creative. Have you ever done that? I felt as thought everything I was doing was just coming up short. I had friends tell me that I can’t overwork myself and that creativity has to be worked out. One friend said that the best advice he ever received was from illustrator Greg Manchess; “Draw all the time, especially when you don’t want to draw.” He even told me that waiting for creativity hurts it, but he did agree with me that maybe taking a break didn’t hurt.
I’ve been trying to improve myself as a designer and as an artist, which may be why this year my posts have been lacking, but it’s something that I want for myself. The above image is from the other day where everything I was doing didn’t feel right or I was happy with it. Everyone has their way of getting through a roadblock or finding inspiration, but sometimes it’s not easy as you hope for or expect it to. A break is fine, but sometimes I feel that there are not enough hours in a day. We all have goals or at least we should, but having a creative stump is a situation where no one wants to be and no one else can really help us get out of.
